J. Weber received his Diploma of physicist in 1963 and his Ph.D. in Physics in 1969 from the University of Geneva.
 
He was then "chef de travaux" at the Section of Chemistry of the University of Geneva before being research associate at the Quantum Theory Project of the University of Florida in Gainesville (1974) and visiting scientist at the IBM Research Laboratories in San Jose, California (1975). Back at the University of Geneva, he was a lecturer in computational chemistry (1976-1989) and then appointed as a full professor of physical chemistry in this University (1989). He has received the Seymour Cray award of scientific computing in 1991 and was visiting professor at the University of Paris VII in 1985 and 1988. He has published one book and he is the author of more than 220 papers in international journals. He is presently Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Geneva.
